Picture this: You’ve been running your coaching business for a few years now. You’ve got clients, you’ve made an impact, and you know your work matters. But lately, something feels… stuck. You’re overwhelmed with ideas, struggling to follow through, and questioning your next move. Sound familiar?
Welcome to your Hero’s Journey.
Joseph Campbell’s famous Hero’s Journey framework—used in every great story from Star Wars to The Lion King—isn’t just for epic adventures. It also mirrors the emotional and mental challenges of scaling a coaching business. While the full Hero’s Journey has 12 steps, we’ll focus on the biggest milestones that matter most when it comes to growing and scaling your business with ease.
1. The Call to Adventure: “I Have Big Ideas, But No Capacity to Execute”
This isn’t about starting your coaching business—it’s about what comes next. You have a flood of ideas: scaling, creating group programs, launching a retreat, streamlining operations, or finally building the systems to sustain long-term success. The excitement is there… but so is the crushing reality of time, energy, and resources.
You’re constantly pulled between serving your clients, marketing your business, and trying to keep everything running. Every time you try to implement a new idea, the mountain of to-dos grows taller. And let’s be real—sometimes, having too many ideas is just as paralyzing as having none.
2. The Refusal of the Call: “I Should Be Able to Figure This Out”
Resistance kicks in.
“I just need to be more disciplined.”
“I should be able to do this on my own.”
“I don’t have time to hire and train someone.”
Many coaches believe they should have everything figured out. You’ve built a successful business so far, so why can’t you just push through? But deep down, you know the truth: you’re overwhelmed, and running your business like this isn’t sustainable.
How an OBM helps: Instead of trying to juggle everything, an Online Business Manager (OBM) helps you streamline operations, prioritize projects, and turn ideas into actionable steps. They ensure you’re focusing on what truly moves the needle while freeing you up to do what you do best—coaching.
3. Meeting the Mentor: “You Don’t Have to Do This Alone”
Luke had Obi-Wan. Frodo had Gandalf. And you? You might have a coach, a business mentor, or an OBM (hi there! 👋).
This is the phase where you realize you don’t have to figure everything out on your own. Support and guidance can make all the difference in helping you navigate the challenges ahead.
How an OBM helps: An OBM acts as your right-hand person, helping you organize your systems, manage your team, and keep you accountable to your goals. No more decision fatigue—just clear action steps and sustainable growth.
4. Crossing the Threshold: “Okay, I’m Doing This”
You decide to make changes, delegate more, or launch that next big project. You realize that scaling your coaching business isn’t just about doing more—it’s about creating the right structure and getting the right support.
So, you take the leap to hire the right support.
5. Tests, Allies, and Enemies: “Scaling Is More Complicated Than I Thought”
Welcome to the messy middle! In this phase, you’ll face a series of tests that challenge both your mindset and business skills. This is where old patterns and limiting beliefs get tested, forcing you to grow in new ways:
Decision paralysis: (“Should I launch a course, do more 1:1s, or start a retreat?”)
Overwhelm from lack of structure: (“I have SO many ideas, I don’t know where to start!”)
Struggling to delegate: (“It’s faster if I just do it myself.”)
Disorganized systems: (“Where did I save that client contract again?”)
Marketing fatigue: (“I love coaching, but I hate selling myself.”)
Lack of consistent revenue growth: (“I’m making money, but I feel stuck at this level.”)
This phase pushes you to let go of old ways of thinking—like the belief that you should do everything yourself—and step into a new mindset of building support and refining your business strategies. You’ll start questioning how you approach your business and learn to ask for help in the right places.
How an OBM helps:
Break it down: Your OBM helps translate big ideas into structured, manageable steps.
Keep you accountable: Weekly check-ins ensure you’re making progress, not just planning.
Refine your focus: An OBM helps you prioritize what actually drives business growth.
Implement systems: From automations to team workflows, they help organize your business so it runs smoothly.
6. The Resurrection: “I’m Finally Running My Business, Not Just Surviving It”
At some point, something clicks. You start seeing results. Your business is more organized, your team is operating smoothly, and you’re no longer drowning in admin tasks. A client has a transformation. You get amazing feedback. You realize you do know what you’re doing.
But it’s not just about recognizing the true value of your work as a coach—it’s also about recognizing the immense value of having the right support and systems in place. You understand that your business’s growth isn’t solely about you doing more; it’s about delegating effectively, having the right systems to streamline processes, and relying on your team to free up your time to focus on what you do best.
How to own this: Keep track of your wins. Save client testimonials, reflect on your progress, and remind yourself how far you’ve come. Confidence isn’t a feeling; it’s a practice. And with the right systems and support in place, you can show up fully in your work, knowing you’re not doing it all alone.
7. The Return with the Elixir: “I Got This”
You emerge on the other side, wiser and more experienced. You’re no longer just a coach—you’re a leader, a changemaker, a business owner. Sure, new challenges will arise (they always do), but now, you have the skills, systems, and support to handle them.
Your Hero’s Journey Continues…
The thing about the Hero’s Journey? It’s a cycle. Every new level in your business will bring fresh challenges. But now you know: you have the resilience, the strategy, and the right support system to keep moving forward.
So, dear coach, if you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure of your next step, know this: you are in the middle of your journey. And just like every great hero, you are capable of so much more than you think.
Now, go forth and embrace your adventure. And if you need a wise guide to help you along the way… let’s chat about how I can support you. 😉
